A Home Defined by Craftsmanship and Character
Set against the sweeping backdrop of the Yorkshire countryside, Bert & May’s Creative Director, Ruth Webber, has reimagined a historic barn into a meticulously curated home. Rooted in the brand’s distinctive aesthetic, this transformation is a celebration of raw materials, artisanal craftsmanship, and a considered approach to design.
With panoramic views of rolling hills, the barn’s location was an undeniable draw for Ruth, who recognised its potential as a sophisticated yet grounding family home. Determined to preserve its original architectural integrity, partitions were stripped back to ensure an uninterrupted flow of light and space while accentuating the natural surroundings. Every element within the design has been chosen with intent, bridging the gap between heritage and modernity.
The Artistry of Bert & May Tiles
A defining feature of the interior is the presence of handcrafted tiles, meticulously selected to enrich the barn’s rustic charm. The tactile quality of Marrakesh Hessian Bejmat tiles infuses warmth into the kitchen and bathrooms, while the deeper, more dramatic hues of Marrakesh Ebony Bejmat introduce a sense of drama and contrast. For Ruth, these tiles epitomise quiet luxury, subtle yet evocative, adding a bespoke, handcrafted sensibility to each space.
A Layered and Textural Approach
While a neutral palette provides a unifying thread throughout, an interplay of textures, organic materials, and varied proportions cultivates a rich, inviting ambience. Reclaimed furniture anchors the space with authenticity, each piece bearing the patina of time and craftsmanship. Upholstered seating, timeworn timber tables, and curated objects lend a sense of narrative and ease, ensuring the home feels instinctively lived-in rather than staged. For Ruth, the magic lies in striking a balance between artistry and function
A Design Ethos with Purpose
“Interior design extends far beyond surface aesthetics,” Ruth reflects. “It’s about layers of meaning, the way a space functions, the moods it evokes, and the unspoken details that make it feel complete. I approach every project holistically; the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. Resourcefulness is key, as it fosters authenticity and brings a sense of soul to a home.”
Art is a fundamental thread in Ruth’s design philosophy, shaping the home’s identity and adding depth to each space. Over the years, she has amassed a personal collection spanning affordable art fairs and original works by local Yorkshire artists, including Carol Douglas and Kate Semple. Championing independent makers and artisans has been central to her creative vision, further grounding the home in its natural and cultural context.
The Bert & May Legacy
As Creative Director of Bert & May, Ruth plays a pivotal role in shaping the brand’s evolving aesthetic, curating new collections, art-directing photoshoots, and leading bespoke interior consultations. Her ability to harmonise rugged materials with refined detailing is evident throughout this Yorkshire retreat, a home that distils Bert & May’s enduring philosophy: soulful, beautifully crafted, and effortlessly lived-in.
