Encaustic Tiles

Handmade in Morocco and Spain, and naturally pigmented, our collection of encaustic
tiles takes the best from traditional tile-making methods and contemporary designs. Made using cement and crushed marble, encaustic tiles have been prized for their durability and vibrancy for centuries. From traditional Victorian patterns to delicately pigmented hexagonal tiles, discover the full range below.

How are encaustic tiles made?

Encaustic means "burnt in" and refers to the way the tiles are made, which is rather unique. Instead of being glazed with colour, the material itself is pigmented and patterns are made by in-laying multiple colours before the tiles are pressed. This method of tile-making dates to the Medieval times and was rediscovered during the Gothic Revival, so you are likely to across these unique and striking tiles in churches and historic buildings. At Bert & May, our encaustic tiles are still handmade by expert artisans in Spain and Morocco who have preserved the traditional methods to make high-quality cement tiles for our customers. As these are a handmade product, each batch of our encaustic tiles can vary slightly in size and hue.

What are the benefits of encaustic tiles?

There are many reasons why encaustic tiles have remained so popular when tiling commercial and residential projects. The mix of materials used makes them very durable, making them perfect for both indoor and outdoor tiles. Every tile is hand-poured and quality-checked to ensure that the highest standards are met and your Bert & May tiles withstand the pressures of modern life.

As the colour is in the material itself, encaustic tiles do not wear down or stain easily. Even if you sand down the surface, they will remain bright and pigmented all the way through. This is ideal for busy homes and long-term projects, especially if you are looking for a spirited patterned tile to add a splash of colour.

Cement tiles are wonderfully versatile and can be used in any area of the house from the kitchen to the bathroom. As long as you have the right preparation, encaustic tiles are suitable for showers, backsplashes, and other areas that need water-resistant materials. Long-lasting and visually impressive, encaustic tiles are a fantastic choice for your renovation project
